WELCOME !!

Welcome to the Skydivers Over Sixty 2011 World Record Attempts Website.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the 2011 SOS World Record Series event at Skydive Deland, Florida USA has been relocated from Florida to Skydive Elsinore, California USA.

The 2011 SOS World Record Attempts are going to be an action packed 9 day long event designed to hone our skills and make a new record. On Sat and Sun, April 9th and 10th, there will be a SOS big way skills camp. Each day there will be 4 formation load jumps working in small groups to practice (or learn for the first time) big way skills that will help you be successful on the Record Attempts. This is a no-stress arena to tune up rusty skills or try flying outside your "comfort" zone. Tuesday, April 12th will be SOS Tunnel Day at the Perris Skyventure Wind Tunnel. Wednesday, April 13th is Practice Day for the Record Attempts. All who wish to be considered for a slot on the Record Attempts MUST attend. Thursday thru Sunday, April 13th thru 17th are days in which the SOS will attempt to make a new SOS World Record.

Once again, Skydive Elsinore in Lake Elsinore, California will be the event location. Drop Zone owners, Karl Gulledge and John Hamilton, are already working on making this the best SOS Record Attempt to date. They will be furnishing the SOS with a Sky Van and 2 Twin Otters. Skydive Elsinore has undergone extensive renovation since we were there last for a record attempt. Skydive Elsinore has a gear shop, on-site rigging services, numerous packers, and breakfast and lunch served daily during this event. If you have non-skydiving family or friends attending with you, they may want to try a tandem skydive. The scenery is terrific. Be sure to check out Skydive Elsinore's website for photos and for information on the facilities available to you.

This year, Skydive Elsinore DZO John Hamilton, will be the SOS Record Attempt organizer. He will be assisted by long-time SOS bench coach, Carol Redding. John, still actively competing and coaching, offers to SOS the experience and skills derived from many years of competition skydiving and coaching. Base captain will be Tom Webber and plane captains are Bill Jones, Larry Elmore and Russ Manhold.

Jeff Jones, son of pioneer skydiver Bill Jones, will be coaching and organizing the bench team. Jeff's specialty is taking skydivers with very little big way experience and teaching them the skills necessary to be on record setting skydives.

The current SOS World Record is 48, set in Deland, Fl. in Jan 2009. The goal for the 2011 Record Attempts is to not only break the existing record, but to attain the elusive 60 over 60 (60 skydivers over the age of 60).

To this end, we have scheduled a mandatory practice day for Wednesday, April 13th. The SOS group will be broken up into smaller groups and we plan to do 4 jumps that day from 12,500 AGL. Each jump will be followed by a video debrief.

Thursday, April 14th through Sunday, April 17th will be record attempt days. Each day, there will be 3 jumps done from at least 16,500 AGL with supplemental oxygen. We will have 4 days of record attempts to make a total of 12 jumps.

The standby team will be making the same number of jumps, practicing the same formation and going to the same altitudes as the record attempt team.

Tuesday, April 12th, the Perris Sky Venture Wind Tunnel at Skydive Perris has offered discounted tunnel time for SOS. This is a great time to refresh some skills needed for successful big ways. And you don't have to be a skydiver to have fun in the wind tunnel. Indoor skydiving would be a thrill for your non-skydiving friends and family.

BBQ dinners will be served at the drop zone on Friday and Saturday nights. Friday evening is Rookie Appreciation night. Rookie Appreciation night is our chance to get to know the SOS Rookies, those who have recently turned 60. Saturday night will be our traditional SOS Reunion dinner. There will be great door prizes donated by many organizations in the skydiving industry. Family and friends are welcome to join us for the dinners and festivities on both evenings.

Looking forward to seeing you there,

Russ Manhold (FlyCustoms[at]bellsouth.net)
Bill Jones

Organization

EVENT COORDINATORS:

Carol Redding, D-17918, wife of skydiving pioneer Bill Jones, has been skydiving more than 16 years. Since 1998, Carol has actively organized and coached SOS, JOS and JOES world record events. Now retired, Carol enjoys fishing and hunting in Wyoming with Bill and their families. Carol is a frequent contributor to Parachutist magazine.

Bill Jones, D-924, is also a plane Captain for the 2011 world record team. Bill, retired from a lengthy Air Force career, has started, nurtured and sold more drop zones than almost anyone else. Bill is remembered for the fabulous Summer Solstice Boogies he and Carol organized at their last DZ in Alaska. Bill is currently loving retired life in Alpine, Wyoming.

Russ Manhold, D-2216, has coordinated and organized SOS World Record Series events in Florida since 2005, establishing the existing SOS 48-way world record at Skydive Deland 2009. A retired commercial pilot living in Miramar, Florida, he jumps regularly at Skydive Air Adventures in Clewiston and at Skydive Deland.

Julie Manhold, POPS #3386, enjoys scuba diving, camping, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding and photography when she is not helping Russ with SOS activities. A lover of all animals, Julie raises Purple Martins in her back yard from January through July each year.

RECORD ATTEMPT ORGANIZER:

John "Hammo" Hamilton

John is eminently qualified to lead the SOS to a new World Record. He is a DZO/Professional Skydiver with over 16,000 jumps. World Cup medalist in both 4 way and 8 way, USPA Gold medalist in 8, 10, 16, and 20 way events. Five time Silver medalist in the 4 way open division at the USPA Nationals. Sector/Plane Captain in 300 Way World Record (Eloy, AZ). He is also a world renowned professional skydiving coach. John's skills, composed demeanor and ready smile will have a tremendous impact successful achievement of a new SOS world record.

BENCH ORGANIZER:

Jeff Jones, son of skydiving pioneer Bill Jones, has been skydiving for over 35 years. He has over 10,000 skydives. Jeff was part of the initial "chasing the 100 way" madness. And then it became 200 ways and 300 ways. During that time, Jeff became instrumental in taking "baby" skydivers and coaching them into becoming world champions. Many of his previous students have gone onto amazing stellar careers in skydiving. On the 2005 JFTC, over 30% of the participants were students of Jeff's programs. Jeff has been Captain on numerous world record attempts. On the 200 way World Record, Jeff provided 15 people who only had 2 to 3 years of experience. Until about 4 years ago, 20% - 30% of the participants in the Arizona Challenge were his "kids". What does this mean? It means that Jeff is very talented at transferring all the information out in the skydiving community to other skydivers. It is something he is good at and also something he really enjoys doing. Jeff was involved with the SOS big way skills camp in April 2010, understands who the SOS are and is ready to use his talents to break the information down on all levels to give the individual he is coaching insight on how to get up there in the skydiving game.

PLANE CAPTAINS:

Larry Elmore, D-11483, a retired naval aviator, former airline Captain, and 400-way World Team member, enjoys instructing in Marchetti SF-s with Air Combat USA. Larry's skydiving and organizing abilities are matched by his calm leadership. He is a true asset to the SOS World Record series.

In 2011, Russ Manhold, D-2216, celebrates 45 years of continuous sport parachute jumping. Russ, a former style and accuracy competitor and USPA Instructor with over 4200 jumps, coordinates the SOS World Record Series in Florida. With the extraordinary help of his wife, Julie, Russ was event coordinator of the 2009 SOS World Record in DeLand, Fl. at which the SOS set the existing record of 48. A retired commercial pilot living in Miramar, Florida, he jumps regularly at Skydive Air Adventures in Clewiston, Florida and at Skydive Deland in Florida. Russ participated in the 2009 POPS 130-way world record at Skydive Perris and has been on every SOS big-way world record since 2003.
